Archiving hard copies of documents for reference or legal purposes is common practice from the largest multi-national institutions to the smallest businesses. However, accessing the documentation can be both a costly and time consuming affair. Digital archiving, not only gives the user instant access to a document for reference purposes but also one that is searchable for the purposes of compiling reports, reworking contracts and checking history.

Removing the need to handle hard copies means that the documents are protected until their due destruction date and, of course, there are no environmental issues with digital documentation. Costs of hard copy archiving can also be reduced.

Archiving of older documents, from one-off publications to entire libraries, where the integrity of the printed work needs to be preserved but presented in a digital format is one of the key areas in which we specialize. For example, using a combination of techniques we can take a 19th century publication where no PDF files are available and not only present it in its original visual form on-line but also make it searchable and give third parties the ability with secure log-in to annotate, comment and review. The original hard copies can then be securely and safely stored with absolutely no further need for potentially damaging physical handling.

This type of archiving can also create a revenue stream, for example, a history society could allow access to its digitized library by member subscription or sales of digital copies, and not only will this recoup the costs of digitization, but also creates new and potentially profitable revenue streams.
